Biotech, R&D, Science
Source: uWorkin

Komatsu’s purpose is to create value through manufacturing and technology innovations to empower a sustainable future where people, businesses and our plant thrive together. Komatsu celebrates its 100 years with a renewed commitment of building a sustainable business for all stakeholders. We focus on building partnerships, considering the needs of society, customers and other stakeholders first and then working together to innovate, solve challenges and create value for generations to come.

Our Brand promise: Creating value together.

About Us

Each piece of Komatsu earthmoving equipment streams live data into our cloud databases. The Remote Health Monitoring team processes this data to detect developing faults or misuse and tracks the machine’s performance. Our team is composed of data scientists that create algorithms, data engineers that support the execution of the analytics suite, and subject matter experts that review the algorithm’s results.

We work with high resolution time-series data, and mainly perform pattern recognition and unsupervised anomaly detection. Our algorithms use a variety of methods: from formal logic to statistical/Bayesian methods, all the way to deep learning models and physical system models.

The Opportunity

An opportunity exists for a Data Scientist to join our team based at either Fairfield NSW or Wacol QLD. You will have two main responsibilities:

  • Overseeing the end-to-end development of analytics: from gathering the requirements, prototyping, progress reports, through to validation, release in a production environment and documentation
  • Developing the core algorithm: identifying suitable models, prototyping and validation
Key Responsibilities
  • Development of Algorithms for the purpose of detecting anomalous events on mining equipment
  • Researches and implements new analytics techniques to ensure Smart Solutions Australasia is at the forefront of Data analytics capability
  • Ensures alignment of Australasia Analytics with the global analytics strategy
  • Facilitates knowledge transfer and understanding for internal and external stakeholders of complex data-science concepts relating to analytics in development and production, using audience appropriate terms
Culture And Benefits

We support our employees in maintaining their technical skills, through training, certifications or attending events. You will work in a constantly evolving environment with modern tools: fast and distributed time-series databases and platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, etc.

You will work as part of a diverse team, in modern offices and / or in accordance with Komatsu’s work from home policy. Komatsu also supports flexible work arrangements.

The Knowledge, Skills And Abilities We’re Looking For

We seek candidates with a background in Engineering, Science or Mathematics and with exposure to data analytics or time-series modelling and simulation through an advanced degree and/or industry experience.

In addition to the above, the following skills are desirable:
  • Experience with Python (this is our main language), environment management tools (such as venv, pipenv, etc.) and object-oriented programming
  • Experience with common software development tools (such as Git) and frameworks
  • Experience with time-series data and/or unsupervised anomaly detection
  • Engineering skills in electrical and/or mechanical systems modelling
  • Experience with timeseries databases like OpenTSDB, InfluxDB or Prometheus
  • Proficiency creating and evaluating statistical or machine learning models with packages such as scikit-learn, statsmodels, keras, pyspark.ml or equivalent libraries if you are coming from an R or Java/Scala background
  • Experience with distributed compute platforms such as Databricks, Spark or Kubernetes
  • We do not expect candidates to possess knowledge specific to the earthmoving industry, however knowledge or interest in electrical and mechanical systems will put you ahead of others
We will consider candidates that do not possess all these desirable skills but are motivated to learn.

Are you Komatsu?
