    About Department
    St Vincent's Pathology is a private practice offering diagnostic testing to both inpatients of St Vincents Private Hospitals located in Fitzroy, East Melbourne and Kew, St Vincents Public Hospital Fitzroy as well as servicing privately referred patients in up to 80 Pathology Collection centres located across Metropolitan Melbourne. St Vincent's Pathology is a member of a multidisciplinary health care team which delivers care in a patient focused manner.

    About the Role

The Pathology Collector is accountable for:

  • Correctly collecting, caring, storing, packaging and labelling pathology specimens
  • The accurate recording of patient information
  • The care of St. Vincent's Pathology patients
  • Complying with St. Vincent's Pathology policies and procedures at all times
  • Providing a high quality pathology service to requesting doctors and patients

Maintaining a high level of skill in pathology specimen collection


  • Collect pathology specimens according to established techniques and procedures.
  • Reception of patients in a courteous manner
  • Interview of patients to ascertain:
    • The identity of the patient, following the St. Vincent's Pathology Identification Policy
    • Patient demographic information
    • Referring Doctor/s information
  • Collection category and billing information
  • Explain procedure to patient and provide written instructions as appropriate
  • Collect the required specimen(s), place in suitably labelled containers, fix laboratory number stickers, store and transport appropriately
  • Courier specimens / reports from the collection location to the required destination if require

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Certificate III in Pathology Collection (or equivalent) from an approved educational institution.
  • Grade 1- Base Competencies - Minimum 12 months experience
  • High level of clinical skill in specimen collection obtained by training and/or development in all types of specimen collection procedures
  • Excellent customer service skill
  • Accurate documentation
  • Current Victorian Driver's License
