About West Moreton Education and Training Centre

The West Moreton Education and Training Centre (WMETC) is a co-educational school which delivers educational programs for up to 32 remanded and sentenced young people at the West Moreton Youth Detention Centre located in Wacol.

WMETC is a stand-alone campus of the Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre (BYETC). The centre operates on a 1:4 teacher student ratio delivers a predominantly vocational curriculum.

Construction of the educational facilities are nearing completion and include purpose-built classrooms, a multi-purpose court and specialist program facilities.

Our staff are passionate about helping improve the knowledge, skills and abilities of our students, many of whom have had disrupted or negative experiences of schooling and often have lived through complex trauma and disadvantage.

In order to maintain engagement of students across the year and address learning gaps, funding is approved for education delivery over 48 weeks of the year. This brings Queensland into alignment with other states and territories across Australia.

The employment entitlements for staff will not change and this provides an exciting opportunity for some flexible work agreements. Through negotiation with the Head of Campus the successful applicant will determine whether a regular or alternative school holiday model is accessed.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of high quality and compliant training that results in successful outcomes for students. You will support students using a personalised learning approach, maintain records of student progress and contribute to the continuous improvement and strategic direction of the school.

The ideal candidate for this role will have demonstrated skills and experience in delivering building and construction qualifications to students with diverse learning needs and from a range of settings, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, speakers of English as an additional language or dialect, young people with learning difficulties and early school leavers.

Specific responsibilities of the role will include:
Design learning opportunities that maintain student and staff safety within the youth detention setting.
Provide coaching, training and support to participants to achieve educational or employment outcomes;
Ensure all participants are engaged in activities which focus on training, employment or personal development; and
Build relationships and network with employers, stakeholders, training providers and community links

Experience in delivering vocational training or developing apprentices will be highly valued as will a demonstrated capacity to build relationships and networks with employers and other stakeholders to support young people to gain entry into the building and construction field.

Mandatory requirement of this role:
Qualification or trade certificate in a relevant areaDemonstrated relevant Industry experience and currencyCertificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) (The successful candidate may be supported to complete or upgrade to this qualification if required)
When working in regulated employment anemployee must have a current Working with Children Clearance (blue card) issued by Blue Card Services.

Desirable criteria:
An understanding of the Australian Governments Core Skills for Work Developmental FrameworkExperience with competency based training in foundation skills and pre-employment training
