JOB DESCRIPTION

The Daily Mercury is on the hunt for someone who can cut through rhetoric and breakdown complex issues for our readers. We need someone who is just as good at writing a yarn straight down the line as taking an out-of-the-box approach to help our readers understand the issues that matter in our patch of the Queensland coast.

If you think you can tackle some of the most important issues in Mackay between writing business and community stories, listicles and handling our website – we need to talk.

Here in Mackay we can promise you controversial politicians and plenty of drama in the mining arena to keep things interesting. We are a digital first newsroom continuing a long legacy established in traditional print medium so we need someone who can come up with quirky ideas to engage readers online ahead of a re-launched paper later this year.

This role is for an experienced journalist, with at least three years’ experience, who must have demonstrated leadership and organisation skills. The gorgeous Whitsundays are in our patch, you can swim with platypuses and there’s even a friendly croc who hangs out in our harbour. And in between the hard news, you could encounter a North Queensland cyclone, bushfire, shark and some true country characters.Your passion for digital journalism is strong and you are an independent worker who is comfortable chasing down fresh leads and uncovering great stories in a community. You would be joining a hard-working, passionate newsroom of journalists who love what they do.

The Daily Mercury brand has been alive for 155 years. A print product will once again complement our website in August.
