We are currently seeking a Lead Skipper to join our thriving team. 

About You: 

As the Lead Skipper of the Fitzroy Flyer, you will oversee all aspects of the Fitzroy Flyer’s operation while at sea and in port. Your primary responsibility is to ensure the safe travel of all passengers and crew whilst the vessel is in your care. 

You will oversee activities such as; the meeting and greeting of guests boarding the vessel, the loading and unloading of luggage, stores supplies and equipment, repairs and maintenance work (in accordance with the routine maintenance schedule), the receipt and transmission of information between marine crew and mainland operation, navigation, and all other activities essential for the safe, efficient and effective running of the Fitzroy Flyer. 

You are also responsible for overseeing the recording of the daily activities in the ship's log, including any repairs or mechanical issues throughout your shift and the weather conditions. As the senior most position on the Fitzroy Flyer, you must lead by example to provide excellent customer service to passengers that are traveling on board the Flyer, chartered vessels or any other affiliated transfer supplier you are required to work on behalf of Fitzroy Island Investments Pty. Ltd.

You have exceptional time management skills and are able to prioritise and delegate tasks to ensure efficiency and profitability. You display professionalism at all times, especially when under pressure and mitigate any negativity. You take initiative to deliver solutions and are committed to ongoing professional development. 

Reporting to the General Manager and Asset Protection Manager, your key responsibilities include;

  • Exceptional customer service at all times with an emphasis on safety.
  • Leading a team to ensuring exceptional levels of customer service and safety are demonstrated.
  • Luggage transportation, stores product transportation & safe equipment handling.
  • Manifest management.
  • Cash handling and stock control.
  • Utilising vessel preventative maintenance software to ensure servicing is routine.
  • Participation in regular meetings with heads of departments to ensure effective collaboration and communication.
  • Administration duties including adoption of our HR software program.
  • Staff attraction, retention and performance management strategies.
  • Staff inductions and regular safety training with a focus on manual handling.
  • Injury management for both staff and customers.

To be considered for this role you must have the following qualifications as a minimum:

  • Minimum Master Class V Certification.
  • Perform routine maintenance on a vessel up to 24 metres.
  • Elements of shipboard safety.
  • Senior first aid/advanced resuscitation.
  • Responsible service of alcohol certificate.

To be considered for this role you must have the following knowledge and experience as a minimum:

  • Minimum 12 months in a similar position as a Lead Skipper on a vessel of 20 – 24 metres.
  • Sound knowledge of Far North Queensland water ways, Fitzroy Island and the Cairns region.
  • Sound knowledge of vessels and rope handling.
  • Minimum 12 months’ sea time.
