We are looking for a Senior Manager, Social Media who will be responsible for developing and delivering a robust social media and content distribution strategy for Rio Tinto. 

You will lead a small team managing all group level social and content initiatives across multiple platforms to target key audiences, develop our presence online and increase online engagement. You will be expected to work closely with senior stakeholders across the business, including our media, IR and legal teams, as well as provide expertise and support to regionally focused efforts

This role is a great opportunity for an accomplished communications strategist and passionate storyteller with a creative mindset – in particular, someone who is keen to celebrate the human side of what Rio Tinto does by understanding current and new audience motivations to establish and develop a common interest narrative. Reporting into and working closely with the Global Head Reputation & Brand, you will be: 

  • Creating, leading and executing social media strategy and campaigns across multiple platforms for Group level, including paid promotion; guide and advise regions on the same
  • Delivering a robust social listening process to identify emerging issues
  • Developing and implementing robust, data-driven plans for each social platform, including executive positioning, with progressively ambitious metrics, including upticks in engagement and audience growth
  • Working with the wider Brand & Reputation team to formulate fresh, interesting and innovative content, engagement and activation plans 
  • Articulating complex concepts simply and driving influence
  • Ensuring all content is on brand for style, quality, tone of voice and relevance
  • Managing campaigns and engagement, ensuring they meet objectives and deliver ROI
  • Helping manage crises and response across social channels
  • Having ownership of social media management and monitoring tools: manage agency support
  • Providing leadership to the Social Media Team and fostering a desire for excellence by setting benchmarks, KPIs and ensuring the Social Media Team’s activity is aligned to business strategy.
  • Creating weekly, monthly and quarterly social media status reports across multiple platforms and extract key insights for future campaign development and recommendations on tactics,
  • Staying up to date with current technologies and trends in social media, design tools and applications to enhance results and provide key insights

What you’ll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Knowledge of what type of content works best on what platform, optimising content accordingly, as well as understanding the different nuances of each platform.
  • A love of data, and the ability to calibrate strategy, content, and audience interest based on metrics
  • A clear voice: excellent social media writing skills that reflect a human voice
  • Visual intelligence: a strong eye for design and content quality in order to recognise and create visually appealing graphics (including video) to coordinate with appropriate posts
  • A clearly articulated point of view on social media and a vision as to where trends are taking corporations are like ours, ideally coupled with a thirst for innovation
  • Expertise and strong track record in managing social media channels and campaigns
  • Strong project management and team management skills

 Where you will be working

The role can be based in any of our hubs or head offices with some limited travel.

You will be part of a global team providing expertise and advice across all aspects of external affairs, stakeholder engagement, social risk management, communication, brand management and media relations.
