Your new role

Rockhampton Botanic Gardens is a 151 year old heritage listed botanic Garden of regional and state significance, with a diverse botanical collection and historic built assets. Council is currently undertaking a comprehensive concept design of the Botanic Gardens and Zoo that will seek to elevate the standing of the site to international significance. Kershaw Gardens is Central Queensland’s premier regional parklands recently redeveloped in 2018 and features a large recreational precinct and playground, native flora collections and several waterfalls.

Council is seeking a passionate and experienced individual to lead a team in the operational management of Rockhampton’s most prestigious gardens to ensure the conservation and appreciation of the natural, cultural and historic values of the gardens.

In this important role, you will protect the local flora, fauna and cultural heritage of the gardens and develop conservation plans to assist with its protection and conservation.

Botanic Gardens and Zoo Redevelopment program is currently in the concept design phase and the Curator will be an integral stakeholder in implementation of this program. As part of a collaborative and multidisciplinary team, your expertise will guide the detailed design and construction of projects of both built form and horticultural collection development.

Your experience managing a team will allow you to successfully lead the horticultural and landscape management for the gardens ensuring outcomes, targets and regulatory responsibilities are met with optimum efficiency and effectiveness.

Safety First is Council’s core value and you will be responsible for leading a strong safety culture. You will also manage the implementation of work health and safety, risk management and environmental plans for the gardens in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.

This position requires the completion of a satisfactory Criminal History Check - Police Certificate (Australia Wide Name Only Police Check).

Application Criteria

Degree qualification in Horticulture, Open Space Management (or related discipline) and/or significant experience in the management of horticultural operations in a large public park or garden.
Proven ability to make decisions, co-ordinate resources and experience managing a team.
Comprehensive knowledge of amenity horticulture, including collection management, sustainable horticulture, park management, risk management and bio-diversity principles.
Knowledge of public policy issues which affect botanic gardens, particularly in the areas of conservation of heritage, biodiversity and sustainability in the horticulture industry.
Highly developed interpersonal skills and experience producing logical and professionally written reports of a comprehensive and complex nature.
