About the Role
Applications are invited for an advanced psychiatry registrar with a specific interest in psychotherapy to join the Psychotherapy Department at St Vincent's Health Melbourne for a one year specialised training placement.

This is an accredited training position funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health under the Specialist Training Program. The Registrar's clinical work takes place both in public settings within St Vincent's Mental Health Service and in the private sector, primarily at a psychotherapy-oriented clinic adjacent to St Vincent's Hospital on Gertrude Street, Fitzroy.

The registrar will be expected to deliver psychodynamic psychotherapy in each of the settings. It is anticipated that there will be opportunities for individual, family and group psychotherapy. The registrar is encouraged to attend to formal educational opportunities on courses related to the development of specialist skills in the area of psychotherapy.

Expert supervision will be provided for each of the psychotherapeutic treatment modalities the registrar is engaged in, and the registrar has the opportunity to participate in a rich array of reflective groups and topic seminars.

There is an expectation that the successful applicant contribute to the on-call roster at St Vincent's Mental Health.

The classification for this position will be HM28 - HM30 ($140,093.20 - $164,538.40pa).


  • Accepting referrals of patients for psychotherapy.
  • Undertaking a comprehensive assessment of these patients to determine their suitability for psychotherapy.
  • Liaising with other members of the treating team at the site to ensure that a psychotherapeutic approach can be successfully integrated into the broader treatment plan for the individual patient.
  • Agreement with other clinicians regarding clinical responsibility for different aspects of the patient's treatment.
  • Reaching an agreement with the patient regarding the plan for psychotherapy, including such areas as duration and frequency of sessions, target issues, duration of therapy and termination of therapy.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor Medicine, Bachelor Surgery or equivalent
  • Registration with the AHPRA or eligibility for general registration
  • Registration as a medication prescriber
