About Department
The Department of Nephrology and Surgery directly oversees the Kidney Transplantation and collaborates as a major partner in islet cell transplantation and vascularised composite allografts. The demand for transplant surgery has increased in recent times, and the hospital currently is involved with approximately 30-40 kidney transplants per year with a growing live kidney donor transplant program as part of the Victorian Kidney Transplant Collaborative and the Australian and New Zealand Kidney Exchange Program.

About the Role
This lead role will be responsible for oversight of all components of the Kidney Transplant Program including administrative, clinical, research and teaching. The successful applicant will collaborate with all other transplant programs at St Vincent's Hospital, the Victorian Kidney Transplant Collaborative and ANZ Kidney Exchange Program.

Additional responsibilities include involvement with the Transplant Donor Surgeons and will form part of the donor retrieval team member. Involvement with both National and State Transplant organisations and governance bodies is expected.

The classification for this position will be dependent on the incumbents years of experience as a senior specialist.


  • Transplant Assessment outpatient clinics and selection of recipient patients and donors (deceased and live)
  • Transplant Surgery, Dialysis Access and related surgical complications (acute and elective)
  • Management of immunosuppression
  • Donor Organ Retrieval - engage in organ retrieval services in association with Donate Life and the statewide retrieval service
  • Post-transplant inpatient and outpatient care
  • Responsible for the development of protocols and guidelines, and auditing of renal transplantation

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Registered Medical Practitioner in the State of Victoria
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or Equivalent
  • Certificate of Post Fellowship Extended Training in Transplantation as issued by the RACS, or equivalent, or evidence of experience in renal transplantation
  • The appointee must demonstrate a commitment to working as a team member with peer medical, junior medical, nursing and other staff to provide efficient, safe and high quality care according to the St Vincent's Mission.
