School of Biomedical Sciences

The University of Queensland School of Biomedical Sciences is a distinguished centre for teaching and research in the academic disciplines of Anatomy, Developmental Biology, Physiology, Pharmacology and Pathology. The School has more than 40 full-time research and teaching staff and is one of the largest Schools of its type in Australia. It has links to other prestigious research centres on the St Lucia campus including the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), the Institute of Molecular Bioscience (IMB) and the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN). Our diverse research provides an exciting environment for national and international research fellows and higher degree students. It is concerned with advancing the understanding of how cellular mechanisms contribute to the function of the human body in health and disease. About This Opportunity

Opportunity to support the day to day operational requirements of the teaching laboratories and undertake practical class setup and clean-up in the disciplines of Physiology and Pharmacology.

In addition, the successful applicant will work very closely with course coordinators to prepare and organise teaching practicals that require your specialist knowledge and skillset.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Participate in the planning and preparation, setup and clean-up of complex experiments (ranging across electrophysiology, tissue culture, molecular biology, microbiology, microscopy and drug development).
  • Perform regular and ad hoc maintenance of a wide range of laboratory equipment and apparatus in accordance with standard operating procedures and technical guidelines.
  • Contribute to the preparation of risk assessments and safe operating procedures in the teaching laboratories, and revision and update of technical notes.

This position reports to the Manager, Teaching Laboratory Services and is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre.

Our Ideal Candidate

Alongside strong knowledge and skills in one or more of the specialist areas of electrophysiology, tissue culture, molecular biology, microbiology, microscopy and drug development, we are seeking candidates able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in science or related discipline (or an equivalent combination of relevant experience/education/training).
  • Knowledge in the operation of practical teaching laboratories in the biomedical sciences.
  • Willing and able to perform manual tasks safely and reliably and carry out duties which require physical dexterity and concentration.
  • Sound computer literacy skills including the ability to use email, word processing, spreadsheets, browser-based applications and software associated with laboratory equipment.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, continuing position at HEW Level 5.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $70,796 - $78,852 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $82,832 - $92,257.
