Position Objective

Undertake the primary responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the water and sewage treatment
plants and other Council water assets so as to contribute to the effective and efficient operation of the

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities may be modified from time to time to ensure the expected outcomes support the
Council’s operational and corporate plans.

All duties are to be conducted in an efficient, timely, professional and safe manner. The key responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain the treatment plants, reservoirs, recycled water assets and pump stations.
  • Respond promptly to operational changes to ensure regulatory compliance for treated water and
  • Ensure that processing is frequently monitored, chemicals and dosing are maintained to required
levels, and treatment equipment is appropriately adjusted.
  • Carry out scheduled and reactionary testing, recording and reporting.
  • Interpret data and act promptly to maintain process control.
  • Promptly initiate repairs and adjustments and where required call for assistance from contractors or the
Workshop and follow up to ensure timely completion.
  • Keep the relevant Supervisor informed of deviations from normal processing and actions taken to
correct them.
  • Promptly inform the Supervisor of changes in treatment which may affect the quality of the output.
  • Ensure worksite and employees are safe and Safety Regulations are met.
  • Ensure economy and efficiency in treatment and handling by continually optimising processing and
  • Other duties as directed by the Supervisor.



  • On the job training will be provided to ensure that the position holder maintains a satisfactory knowledge
and skill base.
  • The position holder will be encouraged to attend workshops and seminars relevant to the position so
as to ensure ongoing professional development.

Work Health & Safety Responsibilities

  • Comply with the Work Health and Safety Act, Regulations, Codes of Practice and Council’s Work
Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Comply with instructions given by the relevant manager and/or supervisor in respect of the health and
safety of themselves and the health and safety of other persons.

Organisational Responsibilities

  • Comply with the requirements of Council policies and procedures as amended from time to time.
  • Ensure complete and accurate records are captured, created and maintained.
  • Deliver high quality customer service within the organisation and to the public.
  • Ensure the security and appropriate intended use of Council information at all times.

Extent of Authority

  • The Supervisor monitors agreed work outcomes.
  • The role has the authority to act in accordance with established procedures and guidelines. Guidance
is readily available from the Supervisor.

Selection Criteria

Qualifications/ Licences – Mandatory

  • Current open “C” class licence (Car).
  • Occupational Health and Safety Construction Induction Card (“White Card”) or the ability to obtain prior
to commencement.
  • Certificate III in Water Industry Operations – primary specialisation relevant to appointed plant (either
water or sewage)
  • Enter and Work in Confined Spaces competency or the ability to complete within 12 months of
  • Certificate III in Water Industry Operations – secondary specialisation (either water or sewage), or the
ability to complete within 12 months of commencement.

Vaccinations – Mandatory

  • Immunisation record indicating Hepatitis A & B vaccinations or immunity; or the ability to be vaccinated in
accordance with Council’s Immunisation Procedure.

Qualifications/ Licences – Desirable

  • Forklift Licence (Licence to Perform High Risk Work LF) or the ability to obtain within 6 months.

Key Selection Criteria - Essential

1. Demonstrated experience in operation, maintenance and replacement/refurbishment of water and

sewage treatment plants, water reservoirs, recycled water assets, and pump stations.

2. Sound literacy, numeracy and problem solving skills with the ability to undertake calculations, recording
and prepare reports.

3. Ability to plan and complete work within agreed time frames and costs.

4. Basic computer literacy with the ability to use computer programs specific to operate treatment plants.

5. Strong observation skills with proven ability to detect changes in water and sewage quality or processing
and promptly adjust and correct.

6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively on own and in a team environment.

7. Preparedness to work 24 hour on call on a rotational basis, weekends and flexible hours.

8. Knowledge of workplace health and safety considerations relevant to the role and how to limit risks in the
environment where this role operates.

Key Selection Criteria – Desirable

1. A sound understanding and general interest in Local Government operations.
