The organisation

Queensland Law Society (QLS) is the professional body for legal practitioners, representing more than 11,000 members state-wide. We lead the legal profession by advocating for good law and supporting good lawyers.


About the role

We are searching for an experienced CFO to lead a group of high-performing professionals, and oversee all aspects of the Society’s finance, payroll and facilities and administration functions. As a key member of our senior management, the CFO will be comfortable in a leadership role that demands clear communication skills and achievement of goals.


Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), this role will be integral to ensure the Society meets all its statutory, operational financial, strategic financial, tax, investment and audit responsibilities. This role will also ensure full transparency over the financial performance of the Society and contribute to a high performing culture by demonstrating inclusive leadership, commercial acumen and subject matter expertise.

The person

QLS is a complex environment and will require your strong communication skills to negotiate, influence and engage at all levels and lead teams through a time of change. You will demonstrate exemplary leadership behaviours (underpinned by QLS’s core values of respect, integrity and service) whilst applying a whole of business focus to realise QLS’s strategic goals.


You will be naturally commercially-minded with an ability to build, design and implement new business processes. You will be customer centric, take an inclusive approach to building effective relationships to find solutions, and be focused on building a great culture within your team and the broader business.


In addition, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in accounting, commerce, business or a related discipline (essential)
  • CA or CPA qualified (essential)
  • 10 years’ experience in a similar role with demonstrated commercial focus and results in strategic planning and implementation.
  • Experience leading through a time of change and building effective relationships internally and externally at pace to find solutions
  • Senior level experience with financial modelling and cash flow management
  • Demonstrated experience in overseeing the payroll function
  • Project management skills with the expertise to lead a premises upgrade project and oversee the premises capital improvements plan
  • Demonstrated expertise in contemporary accounting standards, practices and principles
  • Highly developed analytical and problem solving ability.
  • Highly effective problem solving, negotiating and influencing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and develop a high performing team.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills with the ability to manage resources to deliver competing deadlines
  • Advanced skills in negotiation, influence and engagement at all levels, bringing people on the journey of change
  • A high level of presentation and written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to build, design and implement new business processes.
