About the City Events Unit

The City Events Unit is located within the Strategy, Risk and Performance Branch of the Lifestyle and Community Directorate. The Unit provides strong leadership across the Gold Coast events industry and seeks to-
  • provide benefits to residents, visitors and businesses, via the delivery of a suite of owned events across the city and activation of the City’s key entertainment precincts (Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Southport);

  • ensure a streamlined consultation process for events seeking to use public land, including assisting event organisers in navigating any requirements, deconflicting the broader events calendar and managing the City services required to facilitate these events;

  • support key stakeholders (including Major Events Gold Coast, Safer Schoolies team) in achieving their desired outcomes.

About the Position

Reporting to the Executive Coordinator of City Events, this role’s primary purpose is to lead a team of event delivery professionals and motivate them to strive for continued excellence. This important position is one of three key leadership roles within the Unit, contributing to the team's strategic direction and responsible for driving positive event related outcomes.
The role has a very broad base including touchpoints into policy development, governance, financial management, business and workforce planning, work health and safety, commercial partnership and stakeholder relations including liaison with the Mayor and Councillors as required. A standard workday could involve items such as –
  • Formulating plans to meet organisational objectives
  • Influencing people’s decisions by discussing ideas and providing advice
  • Guiding project methodology / plans
  • Strategically aligning people with particular skills / strengths to tasks
  • Researching and implementing techniques to manage uncertainty / risks
As the lead for the Event Delivery team, one of your primary responsibilities is to ensure the successful execution (planning, marketing and delivery) of the City's portfolio of owned events, including popular events such as Mayor's Christmas Carols, New Year's Eve celebrations in Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, Australia Day and Monster Machinery Day, along with a variety of civic programs and precinct activations. In this process, you’ll need to skillfully bring together the event planners, marketers, and various partners to develop unique and vibrant content that builds the reputation of the individual events and the City. You’ll oversee the development of detailed event management plans that have contingencies to control the multitude of risks that exist at public events, at the same time as identifying mutually beneficial partnership and commercial sponsorship opportunities, all the while further refining and ensuring all activities are contributing to the objectives identified in the Unit’s Business Plan.
You’ll work alongside another leader who is responsible for the Approvals side of the Unit and the role will assume more responsibility over time. This may include writing detailed Council reports and making presentations to various standing Committees or participating in city-wide working groups.

About You

We are seeking someone who:

  • has a Bachelor in Business / Event Management / Marketing or similar;
  • can skilfully organise and lead individuals and small teams by identifying the dynamics and strengths of people and using this to build a collaborative workplace that achieves desired business outcomes
  • has extensive and proven experience in planning and delivering successful medium / large scale events open to the public, including taking new concepts from inception through to fruition
  • understands the criticality of event / campaign marketing including the development of event brands that achieve cut-through, implementing strategies that drive awareness of and attendance at events, ensuring our tactics remain highly innovative and ahead of trend
  • has an intricate understanding of the complexities of large events including the environment required for them to succeed (structures, budget, environment, relationships, infrastructure etc)
  • can build purposeful partnerships with stakeholders and values relationships above all else
  • is a strong financial planner, capable of managing detailed budgets
  • has a positive reputation as a leader
  • is a natural presenter and would be comfortable in the role of Master of Ceremonies at various civic activities, and
  • wants to be part of something fun and meaningful.
