About Department
St Vincent's Correctional Health Services (SVCHS) provide primary health, primary mental health and subacute health care services to Port Phillip Prison. The prison is a privately operated maximum security prison that caters for 1107 males. SVCHS operates a large outpatient health service (St Thomas's) and provides on-site subacute healthcare for up to 40 inpatients of the St John's unit. As part of the multidisciplinary team, the Grade 2 Occupational Therapist will work within St John's subacute inpatient unit, alongside the OT senior clinician and other multi disciplinary team members.

St John's seeks to reduce the length of stay in tertiary health care environments and reduce the need for transfers, escorts and outpatient appointments by offering a range of on-site treatment options, health monitoring and medication management. At St John's, the occupational therapists focus on assessment, treatment, aids and equipment prescription, limited scope physical rehabilitation, disease management, activity engagement and prevention of functional decline.

About the Role
Accountable to the Nurse Unit Manager, Port Philip Prison and the Manager, Occupational therapy, the Grade 2 Occupational Therapist is responsible for the development, implementation and delivery of a high quality occupational therapy service to patients of correctional health services provided by SVHM.

Classifications for this position will range from Occupational Therapist Grade 2 VF6 - VF9 ($81,328 - $93,490per annum).


  • Provide optimal Occupational Therapy clinical management to all patients through the continuum of care by assessment, treatment, re-evaluation, documentation, team liaison and effective discharge planning
  • Ongoing demonstration & evaluation of EBP in the delivery of Occupational therapy to the inpatients of the St John's Port Philip Prison Inpatient Unit.
  • Contribute to the planning and development of activities and services of the Occupational Therapy Service, correctional and inpatient care streams as appropriate
  • Actively participate in the departmental clinical supervision program
  • Actively participate in the evaluation of the effectiveness of the Occupational Therapy department and the occupational therapy service.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • High level of interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills
  • At least two years experience as a Grade 2 Occupational therapist
  • A keen interest & working knowledge of occupational therapy intervention to patients in the acute, aged care and rehabilitation settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledge or previous experience in the area of health care provision in a correctional health care setting is desirable but non essential.
