About Canteen

Just when life should be full of possibilities, cancer can crash into a young person’s world and shatter everything. Canteen provides young people impacted by cancer, and their parents, with access to a team of Allied Health Professionals who deliver programs, counselling and a range of other group and individual support activities.

The team at Canteen assist these young people to access the support they need to develop and maintain the skills and confidence to live healthy and happy lives.

Canteen also engages in community awareness and seeks to develop awareness of cancer support for young people around Australia. Canteen aims to create highly accessible, youth friendly, integrated service hubs as well as a range of online supports, that provide evidence-based interventions and
support to young people aged 12–25 years impacted by cancer.

Job Summary

We are looking for an appropriately qualified Allied Health Professional (Psychologist, Provisional Psychologist, Social Worker/Accredited Counsellor or appropriately trained occupational therapist or therapist) to work in our Brisbane office on a permanent, full-time basis.

The Clinician, or Psychosocial Clinician as we like to call the role, is responsible for coordinating and delivering crucial psychosocial support to young people living with cancer. This involves the provision of individualised psychosocial assessment, the delivery of therapeutic interventions, identifying level of need/risk for young people affected by cancer, planning and review processes, and delivering content of Canteen Programs.

The role is crucial in attracting referrals into Canteen’s services and promoting Canteen in the community by establishing and maintaining effective medical, psychosocial and educational networks. You will work as part of a devoted and dynamic team, supporting and inspiring young people living with cancer.

Selection Criteria


  • A tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling or related Allied Health Field
  • Hold or be eligible to obtain accreditation, membership or licensing from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA), Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), Australian Counselling Association (ACA) or equivalent national registering body
  • Drivers License and First Aid Certificate
  • Innate ability to engage with young people and carers/parents
  • Experience administering brief assessments and ability to co-ordinate care for young people
  • Demonstrated skills in decision making, problem solving, negotiation and crisis management
  • Demonstrated skills in assessment and management of risk coupled with knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of young people (12-25 years) and their families
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication and report writing skills
  • Ability to liaise with internal and external agencies, and across shared-care models
