Job Description

This position would suit a dynamic and inspiring leader of Technology (Home Economics) Education in a highly regarded and sought after school, 8km north of the CBD. In this role, you will lead a high performing team of teachers who are committed to student performance within this technology faculty. The faculty works to support students to be successful in both practical and academic elements of curriculum. As part of the role the position co-ordinates and manages the operation of several key school events with a view to ensuring students gain practical experience in their areas of hospitality study. Implicit in this middle level leadership and management role is a responsibility to implement the school vision and whole school explicit improvement agenda with a keen focus on relationships with students, staff, community and partners. This role is set to commence 12 July 2021.

About Wavell State High School

Wavell State High School, which opened in 1959, is a large and highly regarded State Secondary school in the Inner Northern suburbs of Brisbane. Approximately one quarter of our students are drawn from a defined, local catchment while the majority of students gain enrolment through selective entry requirements.

Your Role

The key responsibilities of the Head of Department Home Economics:

  • Work as a key member of the school leadership team to implement the whole school Explicit Improvement agenda, which currently focuses on Teacher capability underpinned by the new ASOT pedagogy, writing, student engagement and curriculum alignment and development.
  • Australian Curriculum responsibility for year 7 - 10 including overviews, unit preparation, assessment, reporting and moderation
  • Responsibility for the General subjects:- Food and Nutrition .Applied Subject -Fashion, Hospitality, Certificate III in ECEC
  • Working with internal stakeholders to support school events and functions while looking for additional opportunities for students to engage in practical hospitality and early childhood education
  • Management of classroom activities including planning, behaviour and assessment issues
  • Co-ordination, planning and execution of several key school wide events, i.e. Annual Speech night, Prefect Induction and Wavell SHS Open day
  • Management of one home economics support officer who works to assist in the operations of the practical spaces of the faculty
  • Creation and control of the annual faculty budget
  • Management of school facilities used by the Home Economic faculty. This includes kitchen and textile practical rooms
  • Creation and control of the Home Economics faculty direction through the Annual Improvement Plan aligned to the school plan
  • A strong focus on Safety, CARA and Excursion responsibilities
  • Leadership and management of the teaching staff members (5), a number who teach across other faculties
