1 RAR is one of the older infantry units in the Australian Army. It is a Battalion comprising over 600 personnel, 100 vehicles and a vast array of weaponry.

1 RAR’s mission is to prepare infantry soldiers and teams to deploy onto operations. To that end, it focuses on developing the battlefield shooting, fitness, drills/techniques of its personnel and teams.

1 RAR’s infantry move to the fight in protected mobility vehicles, helicopters, amphibious vessels and by foot.

1 RAR has an administration and technical element to ensure its infantry soldiers and teams are ready to operate and fight.

The majority of 1 RAR’s soldiers and teams are aged between 18-25 years old. The Battalion, including its infantry, comprises both women and men.

Over the last 12 months, 1 RAR personnel have served in no less than eight countries in the region and beyond.

Throughout the work experience placement, participants will gain a clear appreciation of what is involved in/what it takes to prepare infantry soldiers and teams for operations.

Accordingly, participants will engage in a range of activities which mirror the daily training of the Battalion’s infantry soldiers and teams.

There will also be opportunity for select participant’s to gain experience with the Battalion’s administration and technical elements.

Students will be fully supervised at all times. Successful students will be advised on the specifics, in the Work Experience Agreement.
