An exciting opportunity exists for a dynamic and inspiring educator to join the school leadership team for a period of 12 months with a possibility of extension. The Head of Department - Languages will lead and manage the activities of students and teachers, in line with the schools Vision and Values, in the following areas - academic performance, classroom practice, administration, budget and staff management, and has oversight of the growth and development of the senior subjects and ACARA subjects in the Junior. Implicit in the role is involvement in campus-wide initiatives in International Programs, study tours and excursions overseas (maintaining existing relationships in the COVID-19 era and looking for innovative ways to build the profile of languages at Wavell).

Wavell State High School, which opened in 1959, is a large and highly regarded State Secondary school in the Inner Northern suburbs of Brisbane. Approximately one quarter of our students are drawn from a defined, local catchment while the majority of students gain enrolment through selective entry requirements. Your Role

The role requires the successful applicant to lead a high performing team of teachers many of whom are engaged in key roles with the QCAA working on quality assurance processes for the QCE for Year 12. Implicit in this middle level leadership and management role is a responsibility to implement the school vision and whole school explicit improvement agenda with a keen focus on relationships with students, staff, community and partners.

The key responsibilities of the Head of Department - Languages include but are not limited to:

Work as a key member of the school leadership team to implement the whole school Explicit Improvement agenda, which currently focuses on Teacher capability underpinned by the new ASOT pedagogy, writing, student engagement and curriculum alignment and development
Australian Curriculum responsibility for year 7 - 10 French, German and Japanese; including overviews, unit preparation, assessment, reporting and moderation
Responsibility for the General subjects: French, German and Japanese
Creation and control of the annual Language Department budget
Creation and control of the Language faculty direction through the Annual Improvement Plan aligned to the school plan
A strong focus on Safety, CARA and Excursion responsibilities
Leadership and management of approximately 6 teaching staff members, a number who teach across other faculties
Work closely with the Deputy Principal responsible for timetabling and fellow Head of Departments to match teachers' skills to classes and monitor class composition
Promoting the value of language learning, be responsible for school tours, student and teacher exchanges and study tours associated with language subjects
A role within the EAL/D area of the school may also develop as will a role in promoting and leading multi-cultural experiences.

A mandatory requirement of this role is:

Current full registration or current provisional registration with eligibility for full registration, as a teacher in Queensland.
Teachers working in Education and Care Services (including State Delivered Kindergarten programs) require an exemption card issued by Blue Card Services.
