The Role
The Executive Officer (XO) of the North Queensland Australian Army Cadet Brigade is responsible for the day to day management Headquarters NQLD Australian Army Cadet Brigade in accordance with the direction and priorities of the Regional Brigade Commander and the needs of the National Headquarters based in Canberra.

As the XO you will manage, mentor and lead an integrated workforce comprising ADF, APS and Army Cadet Staff within the Brigade. You will prioritise and coordinate work priorities, manage staffing capabilities, while ensuring staff uphold Defence values and deliver outcomes.

You will be called upon to provide advice to staff and leaders on relevant Legislation and Defence, Army and Cadet policy requirements to ensure that the deliverables of the youth development program are met.

As such, the XO is expected to understand the specific requirements of Cadet policies and practices as they apply to dealing with youth, in addition to managing and reporting on the delivery of Australian Army Cadet (AAC) outcomes and activities. Due to the nature of the role and the program, a sound working knowledge of incident management and the application of its principles is required.

The XO must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse staff groups and have the ability to understand and work with youth. Communication is the foundation of this requirement and therefore the ability to tailor the message to different audiences who are ultimately time poor is a key requirement of this position.

The successful candidate can expect to be given a considerable level of autonomy to lead a small full time team on a day to day basis. The position offers the opportunity to interact with a broad range of people of all ages involved in the AAC. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in one of Army’s most diverse working and professionally rewarding environments. The position offers distinct opportunities to contribute to youth development across a broad range of activities and events. The XO is required to become a Full Time Officer of Cadets.

About our Team
Daily, the XO will manage the three permanent headquarters staff, consisting of Regular Army and APS personnel, working to the Regional Commanders direction and priorities. On a part time basis the headquarters is staffed by Army Reserve personnel across a number of functions. The Brigade also consists of Army Cadet Staff (ACS), who are the adult volunteer group that delivers the youth development program. ACS wear a military uniform but are not required to hold military qualifications. The Cadets range from the age of 13, when they enter the Australian Army Cadets, to 18, when they ‘retire’ from the program. The XO will have constant and frequent interaction with all of these groups within the Brigade, with increased interaction with Cadets during key activities and events.
