The Catholic Diocese of Cairns serves Far North Queensland, extending from Cardwell to the Torres Strait, and west to the Northern Territory border. The Diocese is responsible for the provision of a range of regional services under the pastoral care and leadership of the Bishop of Cairns.

The Diocese is currently seeking a suitably experienced administration professional to fulfil the function of Administration Officer – Regional Tribunal and Diocesan Chancery. This position will provide effective and efficient clerical and administrative support to the Auditor (caseworker) assigned to the Cairns office of the Regional Tribunal. Most of the Tribunal’s work involves advising about, gathering evidence for, and then judging marriage nullity applications. The Tribunal also functions as an advice centre for those with other questions involving Canon Law. In addition, the position assists with the administration of permissions and dispensations given under canon law by the Bishop of Cairns or his delegate. These generally concern marriages. Compilation and return of annual statistics to the Holy See (the Vatican) comes within the role.

The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for:

  • Taking calls and booking appointments for interviews
  • Preparing quality correspondence to be punctually emailed or mailed
  • Preserving active, completed and archived case data
  • Accurately transcribing audio recordings from dictation software
  • Contacting clients throughout the course of their case
  • Analysing of cases and personnel for statistical analysis to ensure accuracy of data and the credibility of the Tribunal
  • Conducting all duties with discretion and adherence to confidentiality
  • Liaising with Parish Priests, Parish administration and clients
  • Completing forms and processing applications
  • Drawing up dispensations and permissions on behalf of the Bishop

The successful applicant must have:

  • Aptitude for learning and following legal procedures
  • High level communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to operate in a complex organisational environment, independently when needed
  • The ability to maintain confidential information
  • Microsoft Office / Access and Adobe Acrobat Professional competency
  • Understanding of canonical procedure, appropriate to role (training and support will be provided)
  • Significant experience in, knowledge of and commitment to the Roman Catholic Church.
  • A valid Positive Notice Blue Card– No Card, No Start laws apply.
