The Trading & Compliance Legal Counsel will assist in the provision of legal advice to Stanwell’s Energy Trading, and Commercial Strategy and Energy Futures teams.

About the role

The Trading & Compliance Legal Counsel will assist in the provision of legal advice to Stanwell’s Energy Trading, and Commercial Strategy and Energy Futures teams. The primary objective of this role is to focus on compliance with the National Electricity Rules (in particular, the bidding requirements), electricity retail laws and licence conditions, Stanwell’s Australian Financial Services (AFS) Licence conditions and the anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) laws. This role is expected to promote a culture of compliance through the development of policies and strategies, and management of relevant compliance matters.

Responsibilities include:

  • advise relevant areas of the organisation on legal affairs from a regulatory and compliance perspective;
  • provide training and ad hoc advice on compliance matters in conjunction with Stanwell’s legal team;
  • identify and manage compliance issues and escalate material issues to senior management and regulators when required;
  • develop, implement and manage compliance policies, procedures and education programs;
  • manage direct interactions with regulators on compliance matters in a competent and timely manner; and
  • comply with all relevant professional and ethical obligations imposed by legislation, the common law and relevant professional bodies.

Located in our Brisbane office, this is a full-time permanent role within the Legal team. This role reports directly to the Senior Legal Counsel.

About you

The ideal candidate is passionate about compliance and experienced in dealing directly with senior and executive management on compliance issues. To be successful in this role, you will have a tertiary qualification in law and a minimum of five years’ post-admission experience, preferably in energy or a similar industry. Possession of or ability to obtain a Queensland Practicing Certificate preferred.

You will bring a detailed understanding of the regulatory arrangements relating to AFS, AML/CTF and energy markets, including renewable and carbon markets or have a demonstrated ability to quickly acquire an understanding. You will be experienced in managing internal and external regulatory compliance audits, be able to decipher complex compliance requirements and communicate these clearly.

You will use your excellent oral and written communication skills to influence key stakeholders, ensuring that Stanwell is achieving the best outcome for its business. Most importantly, you will set a high standard for attention to detail and be passionate about ensuring the competent and timely delivery of compliance related tasks.
