About the role

Mater Research is searching for an enthusiastic Research Assistant in a full time capacity to join our Blood Cancer Research Group reporting to Prof Maher Gandhi, this role will be initially offered for a 12-month period and is based at the Translational Research Institute in Woolloongabba, Brisbane.

The Blood Cancer Research Group conduct quality research in the areas of lymphoproliferative disorders immunobiology with the aims of understanding the development of lymphoproliferative disorders and improving lymphoproliferative disorders therapy.

Salary: Mater Research Level 5 $64,859 - $72,642 p.a. + super + salary sacrificing

What you’ll be doing

This role will focus primarily on supporting research activity in the Blood Cancer Research Group and will also be responsible for assisting other laboratory staff and higher degree students. Key responsibilities will include:

Assisting in the conduct of high quality research
Assisting in processing of patient samples and generation / maintenance of biobank, relevant sample records and clinical trial data
Performing / optimising / trouble shooting diagnostic assays for ultra-high risk DLBCL (including PCR, nanoString, sequencing) and tabulating results in a timely manner.
Conducting experimental investigations under the guidance of academic staff from the group, and provide technical assistance to students and staff
Maintaining clear laboratory records, and analyse data using statistical and graphics programs
Contributing to the smooth running of the laboratory, including supervision and training of junior members and students of the laboratory
Assisting in the conduct of experiments including preparation, sampling, data collection and analysis and preparation of results and reports
Assisting in maintenance of laboratory equipment, ordering lab reagents and accurate documentation.

About you

You will have proven laboratory experience with the ability to adapt to working in a highly focused team. Additionally, you will possess the following:

BSc (Hons) in biological or biomedical sciences or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
At least two years of practical laboratory experience including nucleic acid extractions, sterile tissue culture, fluorescence microscopy, molecular cloning, PCR, PBMC isolation and ELISA
Demonstrated knowledge in the area of haematology patient sample handling including biobanking
Basic computer skills (Word/Excel/Power point/Access)
Ability to adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and protocols
Awareness of laboratory safety (such as radiation and chemical toxicity) and Occupational Health and Safety
Good interpersonal and communication skills including ability to present and discuss own research work, contribute to discussion of the work of others, pass on technical skills, and work collaboratively across all levels in the organisation
Capacity to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
