JOB DESCRIPTION

The School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences (SCMB) combines the disciplines of Chemistry, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Parasitology into a single academic unit. The School has modern research laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment and research infrastructure. The School includes over fifty academic staff, who are published internationally and have extensive research backgrounds.

The Australian Centre for Ecogenomics (ACE) is a strategic research initiative established at UQ in 2010 and is under the direction of Professor Phil Hugenholtz. It provides a focal point for sequence-based analysis of microbial communities and builds strength in this space not only in Australia, but the southern hemisphere as a whole. ACE is located on Level 5 & 6 of the Molecular Biosciences Building (#76) in SCMB. More information about ACE and SCMB may be found on the web sites ACE and SCMB respectively.

Further information about the Faculty and the School may be accessed on the Faculty’s web site at http://www.uq.edu.au/faculty-school.

About This Opportunity

An exciting opportunity using cutting-edge molecular approaches to better understand microbial processes driving coral larval recruitment and to help provide a future for the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system. This highly applied project is part of the multi-disciplinary national Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program. You will work as part of a collaborative team, principally between UQ and the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), and contribute to the supervision of students. The role will involve running larval choice experiments at AIMS’ National Sea Simulator, a world-class marine research aquarium facility, analysing ‘omics datasets derived from microbial biofilms to identify larval settlement cues, and cultivating microbial inducers for use in coral aquaculture.

This position is primarily located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment. During coral spawning season, you will also spend time at AIMS in Townsville, located central to the GBR and home to pristine coral and spectacular marine life.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will have a PhD in the field of microbial ecology, genomics, metabolic reconstruction, bioinformatics or a related field, with a strong background in the analysis and interpretation of ‘omics datasets to study microbial processes. You should be able to demonstrate knowledge in the area of marine microbial ecology and have experience with experimental marine research (e.g. coral settlement assays).

We are seeking someone with a high level of drive and enthusiasm for reef restoration, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across different institutes, disciplines and cultures. The ideal candidate would have experience meeting project deadlines, successfully delivering milestone reports, and presenting research outcomes to diverse stakeholders.

For a full list of duties and selection criteria, please see the attached Position Description.

You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.
