About the role

The Co-Responder is an advanced mental health practitioner who will work with emergency services providing support and leadership within the Co-Responder Team.

The Co-Responder Model aim is to prevent and safely resolve mental health crisis situations through enhanced co-operation, collaboration and understanding between Queensland Health and Emergency Services (QAS/QPS).

The Co-Responder Team provides specialised mental health knowledge, rapid assessment and intervention and enhanced access to information enabling timely access to care.

The Co-Responder Model consists of an expert mental health nurse and an emergency services officer. This combination of skills safeguards that the person with mental illness is supported appropriately in the provision of appropriate mental health assessment and/or where appropriate transportation to hospital for further mental health evaluation.

About You

The successful candidate will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

Competence in the application of clinical mental health problem-solving skills and effective coordination of consumer care at an expert level along with the ability to exercise independent professional judgment on a day-to-day basis.
High level knowledge of assessment and diagnostic criteria according to recommended classifications systems for mental disorders, substance related disorders and co-morbidities.
Identifies and understands barriers to engagement for people experiencing mental illness and high-level knowledge and skills to engage people in crisis.
High level interpersonal, written and oral communication including advanced skills in consultation and negotiation and the ability to develop effective partnerships within the Health Service and with external stakeholders particularly emergency services.
Experience in driving and facilitating the provision of clinical education and professional development for mental health care professionals and external agencies as required.

About Acute Care Team

Acute Care Team (ACT) functions as the first point of contact to community and acute mental health services 24 hours, 7 days a week. Following assessment, the team facilitates the most appropriate type of care (e.g. inpatient, community, crisis interventions) for the individual.

Anyone can access this service by calling 1300 MH CALL (1300 64 22 55) directly and talking to a health care professional.
