Senior Residential Care Worker, (FYPS - RCaTs) (General residence – Carter Rd)

The Residential Care & Transition Services (RCaTS) team currently has a permanent part-time vacancy for a Senior Residential Care Worker, working 60 hours per fortnight, whilst anticipated to be based primarily in the Brisbane South East Region, allocations can be changed based on operational need.

The role:

Working within a house, the Senior Residential Care Worker (Senior RCW) will be responsible for leading and supervising a team of Residential Care Workers (RCWs) in providing daily care for children/young people. This is a hands-on role, working as part of the team while ensuring individual plans are being implemented, Model of Practice is being followed and children/young people are being supported appropriately.

The Senior RCW will provide formal supervision to RCWs in their house. The Senior RCW reports to the Care Team Leader and will also work closely with the Area Coordinator.

To be eligible for this position you:

  • Must hold a relevant qualification that meets the Minimum Qualification Standard for Residential Care Staff in Queensland – a Certificate IV (or higher) in Community Services or related discipline (For a full list of recognised qualifications, visit:
) * Must be resilient, mature, patient and confident working with challenging behaviours such as verbal and physical aggression.
  • Will have previous experience working with children/young people affected by trauma and disrupted attachment will be an advantage.
  • Will be a problem-solver who works well in a crisis.
  • Will have excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), with intermediate level computer skills.
  • Must hold a Senior First Aid Certificate.
  • Must have the ability to do shift work, including sleepovers, and work weekends and Public Holidays
  • Must have the ability to maintain extreme confidentiality when providing service to clients and external stakeholders from culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Must hold a current Queensland Provisional Green or above Driver’s License
  • Must hold a positive notice in the Working with Children Check (Blue Card) and be able to obtain a positive Police Check and any other legislatively required personal history screening as required.
  • Must have an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and societies and the issues which impact upon them in contemporary society together with a commitment to culturally appropriate engagement and practice is highly desirable.
  • Will have completed the online Hope and Healing Framework Foundations Training modules.
Key Selection Criteria
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills, with ability to balance and competing priorities, including staff management and administrative and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised with vulnerable children/young people, providing guidance, supervision and support within the Mercy Community framework.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a positive role model with children/young people, including engaging with children and young people and building appropriate relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a multi-disciplinary team to achieve maximum positive outcomes for clients.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to produce clear, accurate and concise written case notes and reports, meeting pre-set timeframes.
  • Willing and able to work within a Christian context and Mercy Community’s mission, purpose and values.
It is beneficial for candidates to have:
  • An understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and societies and the issues which impact upon them in contemporary society together with a commitment to culturally appropriate engagement and practice.
  • Previous leadership experience working with children and young people within the child protection context.
Experience in providing support and services for children/young people in and out of home care setting or similar.

This position offers an hourly rate of $36.62 per hour in line with Level 4.1 of our Enterprise Agreement. You will also have the opportunity to increase your take-home pay by salary sacrificing and other benefits.
